See you there! :)
Over the weekend, Fully Booked together with Comic Odyssey celebrated the 76th Batman Day! To make it even more interesting, they invited the legen--wait for it--dary writer and comic artist, David Mack, to do an interview panel and book signing. Of course, being a loyal visitor to this annual event and a big fan of David Mack, I couldn't afford to miss at least a part of it.

Part of the excitement in every Batman day (other than dressing up for the occasion) is the chance to get a special Batman comic absolutely FREE! For this year, the special comic received was the Batman Endgame Special Edition #1 by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, with a script by Tynion and art by Tony S. Daniel, that includes a special 8-page preview of Batman and Robin Eternal! You could also avail of a special Batman Day discount on all graphic novels, collectibles, comic sets, shirts, posters, and back-issues.

David Mack and Batman fans alike were also in for an absolute treat as the famous writer and comic artist sold limited edition Batman art prints (only 200 prints made!) for only P500! All of these prints were already pre-signed by him as well since they were already available the moment Fully Booked in BGC opened.

Got the 23/200 print of David Mack along with my free comic book!

Since I already had a prior commitment for the afternoon that day, I had to make sure that I was able to take home one of these prints as part of my collection. Even if it was a little upsetting for me to miss his book signing and panel, I am more than grateful and honored to be able to take home one of his special artworks. I was also able to meet David Mack in person the week before at the Asia Pop Comicon. :)

For many, the month of May is the best time to hit the road and enjoy a summer vacation with friends and family. But for me, its usually a different story. One of the most interesting international geeky holidays that I anticipate yearly is the "FREE COMIC BOOK DAY" (also known as FCBD) which was celebrated on May 2, 2015.

Yep, you read it right -- for one day, most if not all bookstores around the world give readers a chance to bring home special comic books from different comic publishers to enjoy without any purchase required from the store. Other than the free comics, you could purchase graphic novels, back-issue comics, and a couple of action figures at discounted rates. It is also a gathering where many comic readers, cosplayers and comic book artists of all ages celebrate the joy of their favorite titles, comic book characters and stories. Of course, since this is a first come, first serve "until supplies last" kind of event, many fans had to really make the effort to come early and line up to get their share of the fun. In my case, I had to line up with a friend for almost 2 hours outside before I was able to get in but trust me, it's definitely worth the wait especially if you love comics and graphic novels like me.

For this year, I was able to bring home a total of 7 free FCBD comic books from big comic book publisher names like Image, Dark Horse, Marvel, McFarlene, etc. I was also able to buy the much awaited Archie VS Predator #1 during my visit at Comic Odyssey in Fully Booked. Lucky for me, it was also the last copy of the issue. :)

My free comic book day stash! :)

Sadly, some of the titles I was anticipating to check out weren't available in all participating branches such as "The Fight Club" from Dark Horse Comics and the "Bob's Burgers" special issue. Nevertheless, it is definitely an exciting and fun experience that you ought to enjoy by yourself or with your friends and family. Thank you to Comic Odyssey and Fully Booked for making this possible every year!

HAPPY FREE COMIC BOOK DAY EVERYONE! :)
As we are transitioning into the month of August, I want to give out a little something special as an official welcome to my new blog! Since we celebrated Batman day just recently, I will be giving out the Batman Detective Comics Issue #27 Special Edition to one lucky fan! Sealed and fresh off the bookstore - you heard it!

So guys, if you missed out on Batman Day (you can read more about my experience on the Batman Day celebration here), this is your chance to grab yourself a copy of the much anticipated free Batman comic book this month! To join, simply follow the instructions provided by the Rafflecopter:

Last April 2014, DC Comics announced that July 23, 2014 is officially BATMAN DAY! It is quite amazing how Gotham's favorite Dark Knight has reached another milestone as it marks its 75th year! Though, since Batman Day landed on a weekday, one bookstore in the Metro wouldn't let this remarkable moment in comic book history slip out!

Fully Booked Philippines celebrated Batman Day last Saturday, July 26, 2014, in several of their branches spread across the Metro. The main event of course was celebrated at Bonifacio High Street. To start the event, the first 75 fans to show their love for the caped crusader upon store opening - whether it is to come in full costume, have a Batman tattoo or as simple as wearing a Batman T-Shirt, get exclusive goodies from Pacific Licensing, the official license holder of Warner Bros. I arrived at the store about an hour early with my Funko Pop Rides Collectible #1 - the 1966 Batmobile that I snagged for a great deal at the Bangkok Comic-Con (I will be writing about my finds and experience there soon)! Despite coming early, the line was already piling up by the back entrance of Fully Booked.

Part of the fun that awaited all Batman fans is that Comic book stores around the world, including Fully Booked, were going to give out the special anniversary issue, Detective Comics #27 for one day only. This comic features a reimagining of Batman's 1939 comic launch designed by Chip Kidd, and written by the NY Times best selling author Brad Meltzer. Since there was a limited number of copies of the comic book available in each branch, only one (1) comic book was given on a first come, first serve basis.

When the store opened, there were already several activities lined up for the fans. Aside from free comic book giving and the first 75 gifts, you can get prizes from joining the trivia contests or even just impersonating Batman's voice and impressions! Batman themed donuts from Go Nuts! Donuts was also being distributed to the hungry fans for free!

After collecting the free comic book at the ground floor, the Batman fans were then directed to the 4th floor where more Batman themed activities awaited them. Artworks and the vast Batman toy collection of Anna Gajudo were displayed for fans to appreciate. There were also a number of local and talented comic book artists who were offering to do awesome sketches for a reasonable price. There were contests as well that you could sign up to win prizes such as the trivia contest, the drawing contest, etc.

Toys! Toys! TOOOYYYYSSS!!!

Other than just enjoying the several activities throughout the day, the fans and walk-in guests could also enjoy a discount up to 20% off on selected titles and items just because.... it was BATMAN DAY! My brother was able to get a good deal on his new art book and got a free DC Comics poster with it.

Overall, it really was a commemorative moment for Batman. Other than celebrating its overflowing success for 75 years, it was truly heartwarming and fascinating seeing how the event was enjoyed by different generations and how parents who were Batman fans encourage their children to appreciate and fall in love with the brilliant caped crusader. Thank you once again to Fully Booked Philippines for the amazing experience!

Stay connected as I will be doing a special Batman Comic Book giveaway very soon! Hope you enjoyed reading my Batman experience. KAPOW!
Last May 10 and 11, 2014, I had the utmost privilege and chance of a lifetime to have lunch with one of the most successful and well respected comic book artists to date - Mr. Charlie Adlard. I first heard that he was coming to Manila through a good friend of mine, Arra of Style Reader, as part of Fully Booked's major book signing events last summer. I knew that this was an event that I couldn't miss.

Just a brief background on Charlie Adlard:

He actually visioned himself to be more of a musician or a film maker more than a comic book artist. Drawing on paper however was Adlard's first love. Coming back to place his remarkable art works with a dab of ink and paper, he later became the brilliant main artist behind the popular and successful comic book series, The Walking Dead, which is also now a huge hit in the TV series industry worldwide.

Charlie is also well known for his art on other notable works such as Savage, 2000 A.D, X-Files, Mars Attacks!, and Judge Dredd: The Megazine. He is also well recognized in doing ink works for creator-owned comics like Rock Bottom, Curse of the Wendigo, White Death and Codeflesh.

Should you be wondering how I was able to have lunch with him, it actually was an unexpected surprise as well for me. During the big announcement of Charlie Adlard's Book signing event in Manila, Fully Booked wanted to give more to Adlard fans by creating a zombified contest! All the interested fans had to do was to zombify themselves and send them over via Instagram or Twitter for a chance to win signed copies of the first The Walking Dead issue, and the top 3 photos get to have lunch with Charlie himself. Being a very big fan of Zombies since I was a kid and a huge follower to The Walking Dead series, I considered it as a golden opportunity, however, I was a bit too shy at first. Luckily, my good friend Arra encouraged me to join and I decided to send in my old Halloween costume that I had last year - the zombie zipper face:

Yep, that's me with a legit zipper glued to my face! :P

Surprisingly enough, I received a message from Fully Booked telling me that my photo entry made it to the top 3! You could probably imagine how overjoyed I was despite hearing the good news during work hours.

The message that made my day! :)

On May 10, 2014, Charlie had his Q&A and book signing event at Fully Booked in Bonifacio High Street. I was there early to beat the long line with my friend. The event started around 3pm as Charlie began sharing his experiences, challenges and of course, joys of being a well-respected comic book artist to date. He also shared with the crowd who Charlie Adlard really was behind the pen and paper - on how he really loved music, and being a family man back home.

One of the most commendable deeds that Charlie did during his visit was to donate in order to help the families who were affected by the Super Typhoon Yolanda. He truly was amused with the sight of the huge check for photo ops, saying that he always wanted to carry one of those since they are usually seen on TV primetime shows, raffles, and charity events.

Right after the Q&A and photo ops, the event immediately proceeded to the book signing portion. While waiting in line to have my book signed, I was already beginning to feel both nervous and excited at the same time. I was even trying to think what to tell him upon meeting Charlie for the first time - sadly, I was too starstruck to say anything but "I really love your works."

Charlie Adlard and I during Book Signing Day 1

The very next day, I was scheduled to meet with Charlie along with two other winners for lunch at the Press Cafe located at the ground floor of Fully Booked ATC. Due to too much excitement, sleeping the night before was quite a challenge for me nevertheless. I was spending most of my time thinking of things to share with Adlard and the rest of the group, and also the questions I wanted to know within and beyond The Walking Dead. Either way, our lunch turned out to be a fun experience that I will never ever forget. Upon meeting him up close and personal, he complimented each of us based on our photo entries to the contest. Mine being the only zipper faced zombie, he told me that out of all the entries he saw, mine was the most original. I was beyond flattered to know that my hard work in creating that look for last year's Halloween was really worth it - heck, I wouldn't have had this opportunity if it wasn't for it. I guess it's safe to say that hard work and patience really does pay off! It was also delightful to know that we were the first fans he ever sat down with for lunch! :)

Charlie Adlard with the Top 3 :)

During our lunch (which was really delicious by the way!), we came across a variety of topics other than just The Walking Dead. It was really nice to know how simple yet bubbly Charlie was in person. Other than talking about his success in the comic book industry, he also enjoyed sharing his insights and interests with us beyond his love for drawing - for instance, I discovered his love for music and TOYS! He also shared with us a few photos of his kids and one of his prized possessions - the LEGO MECHA GODZILLA! He was also sharing with us how he was a "VIP Zombie" in the first episode of The Walking Dead TV Series, and described to us how it was like to attend the shooting production of the popular TV show. After all the laughter and stories shared with one another, we had to wrap up as the Alabang Book Signing Event was about to begin.

Lining up for the second book signing!

Sketch time! :)

Overall, the Charlie Adlard Book Signing event was truly one of the most unforgettable experiences in my life. It still feels so surreal knowing that this came unexpected yet so rewarding and fruitful at the end. Thank you Fully Booked Philippines for giving me this honorable opportunity to spend time with such an incredible and inspiring artist! Thank you Charlie for the fun stories, the inspiration, and the Michonne sketch- it truly was a pleasure meeting you!
